Anti-wrinkle injections (often known as Botox injections) smooth away fine lines and wrinkles. The most popular and effective way of preventing the lines becoming permanent is by using muscle relaxing treatment.

How does it work?

Botulinum toxin (Botox) when injected into a muscle temporarily relaxes the muscle by blocking nerve impulses. As the nerve impulses are blocked the muscle is temporarily unable to contract so that dynamic wrinkles are not formed. This gives the overlaying facial skin a smoother, softer and more youthful appearance, which is why this is a very popular cosmetic treatment.

Treatment areas?

This treatment can be used on the forehead (frown lines), in-between the brows (glabellar) and crow’s feet (smile lines around the eyes).

How long will it last?

The effects of the treatment are usually seen around 5 – 7 days, but can take up to 2-weeks. The effects last approximately 2 – 4 months – often longer with repeated treatments.

Who should not have Anti-wrinkle Treatment?

Treatment is not suitable for any individual with Myasthenis Gravis, Lambert Eaton Syndrome, patients with swallowing difficulties, if you have an infection, pregnant or breastfeeding women, If you are aware you are allergic to Botulinum Toxin-A Treatments, and those under 18 years or over 65 years of age.

What are the side effects or complications of a Treatment?

Side effects are uncommon and temporary but may include; slight bruising, swelling, redness, headaches or tenderness at the injection site. These symptoms are rare and if exist, should resolve within a few hours or days. Very occasionally the treatment may not work as some people are immune to the effects of the treatment. Occasionally, the treatment may relax nearby muscle groups causing temporary drooping of the eyebrow or eyelids. This may last for a few weeks but will resolve with time. It is advisable that clients do not take Vitamin E, Aspirin, Non Steroid Anti Inflammatory Drugs or drink alcohol prior to the procedure as these substances can increase the chances of bruising as does taking warfarin.

What can I expect after treatment?

For six hours after treatment it is advised that you avoid exercise, hot baths or alcohol as these can increase blood flow and dilute the effect. It is important to avoid touching the area injected, including applying make-up, as this may actually push the product beyond the intended area. Avoid laying down for four hours after treatment. Avoid extreme sun exposure, UV light, freezing temperatures and saunas for 2 weeks after treatment. Avoid having a facial for 24 hours. Do not take any long haul flights for 24 hours.

You are encouraged to actively use the treated muscles (e.g. frown or squint) frequently during this initial period as this may enhance the effect.

A follow up appointment will be arranged to see you 2 weeks after your treatment for a review to ensure your satisfaction and top up if required at no extra cost.
