Protect your skin barrier!

Winter can be brutal on our skin. Cold, windy weather outdoors and central heating indoors create a perfect storm for skin problems, so if your skin is feeling dry, dull or uncomfortable, read on!

The Skin Barrier: what is it and why does it matter?

Your skin barrier, also known as the stratum corneum, is your skin’s first line of defence. It’s a thin, protective layer of cells and lipids that locks in moisture and keeps harmful irritants out. It is your skin’s suit of armour. When it’s healthy, your skin feels smooth, hydrated, and comfortable. You may notice dryness, redness, itchiness, and even breakouts when it’s compromised.

Winter weather is notorious for damaging the skin barrier. Cold air and biting winds can strip away the natural oils that keep your skin supple. To make matters worse, heated indoor environments can dry the air even further, creating a dehydration cycle – and no one likes one of those!

For women going through hormonal changes, the skin barrier may already be more vulnerable – even before it is exposed to the dramatic temperatures of Winter. Lower oestrogen levels associated with menopause can lead to a decrease in natural oil production, making the skin drier and more prone to sensitivity. When winter conditions add to the mix, your skin can become inflamed and uncomfortable.

Inflammation is another factor to watch out for. Moving between cold outdoor air and warm indoor environments causes blood vessels in your skin to expand and contract quickly. This can result in redness and irritation, particularly if your skin is already sensitive.

How to Protect Your Skin Barrier This Winter

Thankfully, there are steps you can take to safeguard your skin and keep it looking its best!

Tip 1: Cleanse your skin gently, avoiding harsh cleansers that leave your skin feeling dry and tight. Creamy, hydrating cleansers are best!

Tip 2: don’t hold back on using rich moisturising creams during the cold months of Winter – make sure you are making the most of moisturisers that contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid to help rehydrate, repair and strengthen your skin barrier.

Tip 3: It might be worth investing in a humidifier to help add moisture to the air in your home if you particularly struggle with dry and irritated skin.

Tip 4: Don’t be afraid to ask for support if needed! I’m always happy to help you review your skin’s unique needs so that you can care for it more effectively.
